The birthplace of modern central banking

It’s Sweden. The Scandinavian country isn’t just home to Ikea, meatballs and the midnight sun; it is also where modern central banking was born. Stockholms Banco was created in 1656 by royal decree. Johan Palmstruch, a Dutchman by origin, was appointed to lead the institution, making him the first central banker in modern economic history.
